Default Engine Code 32 - OBD 1

Yesterday I posted that I was getting a code 12 when I read the code reader. What I didn't see was an underlying code 32. It shows up after 3 cycles of 12 codes. It continues for 3 cycles and then the MIL light goes out.

I checked the Tech section and found only advice on OBD II codes. Can someone shed some light on code 32 and give any hints as to how to do the repair to stop the code from appearing?

Thanks,

Bill

The code 12 is just an indicator that tells you the diagnostic terminal is grounded. It will flash 3 times. If any other codes are stored, they will flash 3 times each. According to my info, code 32 indicates an issue with the EGR... "Vacuum switch shorted to ground on start-up, switch not closed after the ECM has commanded the EGR for a specified period of time or the EGR solenoid circuit is open for a specified period of time. Replace EGR valve."

As far as replacement, I have not had to do that piece of service , yet, so I can't help you on that, so maybe someone else out there with more hands-on experience will help ya.

BTW, to clear the stored codes, just disconnect the battery for 10 seconds. Hope this info is of some use. Good luck.

Dont replace it just yet. Do you have the 4.3 tbi or 2.8?

If you have the 4.3 follow the plastic line off the egr that runs to the map sensor. they crack sometimes and causes the light to come on. If all the lines are clear, remove the egr, grab a can of brake cleaner and a toothbrush and clean it. you will see a black piston in it that moves in and out when you press on the diaphram. press it in with one hand and spray down in it and scrub it with the brush. they normally get dirty and stick. the electric egrs usually go bad.

Cavecookie, Chris and Giovanni,

Thanks for replying to my problem post. The S-10 Blazer is a 1992 4.3 engine code "W" which is the Vortec with MPI. The vehicle is a 2-door 4x4 that has been in the family since new. It has 126K miles on it. It currently is my "snow plow" and it has a Meyer 6 1/2' blade. I also have a 1997 LT that I purchased new.

I'm not sure that there is a plastic line from the EGR. I will look this morning again, but all I saw was the electrical connection plug. The plastic line may be for 4.3's with a carburetor. I could have missed it though, the EGR is behind the belt tensioner and lots of other hardware and wiring.

A diagnostic schematic for the code "W" engine would be real helpful Gio.

Thanks,

Bill

BTW, I live in Western New York State near Rochester

OKie dokie. Most of the 91's came with the throttlebody with injectors. Since you have the cpi system and electric egr you wont have a plastic line. Id remove it and clean it before doing anything. I bet its got a chunk of carbon holding it open. When i bought my dads blazer for cheap it was doing exactly what yours is doing with a code 32. I had to clean it 4 times as there was a bunch of carbon in the system. They make a special screen gasket that blocks chunks from getting in it.

I have 300,000 on mine, got tired of constant cleaning. I cleaned it one last time, installed it and unplugged. It runs great, only thing it keeps the SES light illum, but i can live with it.
