I'm with old skool. Get yourself some long extensions (I used an 18" and a 6" of I remember right and come in from the front. Boy you picked a heck of a first project. It really sucks. If I never have to do it again I'll be a happy camper. My 94 Vortec has the filter adapter on the driver's side and the lines just run forward and then to the filter which is mounted on the left fender. The manual actually gives two different options for the filter, one being directly on the engine like you would normally see it. I think you could make it work if that's what you wanted to do but I'll check some more and post again. Of course you wouldn't have the oil cooler anymore. The adapter "O" ring seal can leak (as I well know) and I bought one of those aftermarket parts kits with several "O" rings and a couple of gaskets in it. The "O" rings in it are pretty close but if you end up putting the wrong one on it'll leak like a sieve. Got so frustrated with it I bought just the gasket and "O" ring kit from the Chevy dealer and haven't had a problem since. Cost more than the aftermarket one but it ain't leakin' and I ain't squeakin'.
