Default TH 400 fluid

I have an 83 K5 (5.0L engine, 4WD) with a TH400 auto tranny which was rebuilt in 2013. It has probably been driven less than 1000 miles since then. It is 2 pints low. What transmission fluid is recommended?

I may have been mistaken. The specs I found online state that it is a TH700-R4 and not the TH400. Do they both take the same tranny fluid? If not, which one does the TH700-R4 take?

That's what I thought it should be, but you sounded so sure that I figured somebody must have swapped it, lol. It takes Dexron VI, which is backwards-compatible with the original fluid (Dexron II?).

Thanks!

I am hoping it was not changed out. I remember when I bought it in 2013, I had the receipt for the rebuild of the transmission. Who knows if a different one was put in before that and that was what was rebuilt. Anyway to confirm with a code on the tranny (like engines have codes on them)? If so, where would I look?

Post a picture of the transmission pan and we should be able to tell you pretty quickly. The TH400 pan kind of resembles the state of Texas, while the 700R4 is more square.

Check for instructions stamped into the dipstick, but it's normally checked at idle in park or neutral while hot.
