The water pump on my car is worn out so i have to replace it

I see that the axle on the water waterpump have threads

I wonder how do i take the fan and fan clutch off of the axle on the water pump?

Any knows if the threads on the water pump axle loosen the clockwise or if the threads loosen counter clockwise?

 

Either put a chain wrench on the pulley to hold everything still

OR

Put a big a$$ adjustable wrench on the nut for the fan nut....kinda throw it one way then smack it the other way with a BFH

Chain wrench is the preferred method LOL

ETA: I want to say counterclockwise to remove?

1. Use a pipe wrench.
2. leave belt on pump to help with slipping.
3. lay a blanket under wrench to protect stuff. hit pipe wrench with hammer.
4. drink a beer.

 

I always used a long a$$ screwdriver/pry bar to wedge in between two of the screws on the pulley for the pump and then i think a 24" crescent wrench to get that junk off. While you're at it, go find yourself a 00+ dodge intrepid electric fan to replace that junk LOL

Also I agree with drinking beers after any mechanical work!

 

I use this

 

I've done it two ways:

1. a strap wrench to hold the pulley, and a large adjustable wrench on the nut, turn counter clockwise and it'll budge, sometimes gotta hit the wrench with a hammer for a bit of an impact.

2. Rexmburns's method - air hammer with a chisel, I put the chisel right on the edge of the nut, one quick blast and the fan is coming right off :-D This is my favorite way.

 

No chisel in my method it's a tool specifically designed to remove fan clutches using an air hammer that takes about 3 seconds of pulling the trigger and then finish removing with your fingers!

 

If you didn't have a 24" crescent wrench, what is the actual size of the nut. Is it 36"?
