I've done a heater core job on a 97. A shop wanted over $800 to do it, I think not. I looked and was expecting an all day job - 7 or 8 hrs minimum. Dreading it obviously. I only found which bolts needed to come out which helped, but not a lot. Either way I took all the dash bolts out, but pulled the dash out just enough to get to the core. Took maybe 2hrs tops.... Do not pay some oneto do it, it's simple. Goodluck!

Taking the dash out is really not all the difficult. Lots of screws to remove, center console, the four lower trm panels, drop the steering column down a bit, and have a 2nd person to help lift the dash out. Oh and there are two screws under each speaker grill. The dash will rotate on pins so that you can disconnect several electrical connectors and then remove dash out the passenger side door....this is where it is really nice to have a 2nd person. The dash is not heavy, but awkard to get out.
And while in here....does your A/C dump out onto your feet but not the dash vents? If so, then you can fix this as well. The vacuum controlled diverter can be easily replaced at this time. Also fixes the defroster.
Good luck.

First off- don't waste any $ on any Haynes manual! Those books were written by some people talking about the car,not taking it apart! These still even have generic factory photos from the 60s &70s! Plenty of info on this sites search feature-just take your time to get all fasteners back where they belong and as LannyL81 says:swap the blend door actuator at the same time!

ive seen alot of people on here talking about taking it apart. most that ive seen is just "basic" how to's, but no detailed instructions. I dont want to take apart anything that dont "need" to be.
.... wow alot of people told me that the haynes manual has instrctions how to take the dash apart and replace the heater core...

sorry its been awhile, but hers an update. I said **** on the manual and from what ive read online, went that route. I took the dash out yesterday. but when i opened the new box with the new heater core, the bottom row was compeltely smashed in so got to wait till tuesday. but yea easy, drop the steering calumn, no need to take out the cluster. just the main face area, then two bolts on underdash on both sides by doors, the 4 up top, under speakers, and center vent thats it. the dash can just be tilted unless ya want to un do all the harnesses, i got it out with eas without doing all that. But yea, thanks alot guys. so far so easy. and only took 3 hours to dismantle, and probebly 2 hours to put it back togather.
