Was there evidence of gear impact to the crank sensor before the extra shim?

Yes the one I replaced the old one with was damaged just from trying to crank it over. The second replacement sensor I got spacers for. I tried it with one spacer first, and when no start I figure why not put the other spacer on, and he fired right up. Appears to have been the issue all along.

Now the replacement gauge cluster doesn't read
rpm and vehicle speed. And only registers oil pressure when I press on the gas pedal. Oh well, yet another thing I have to fix.

You will need to perform a relearn on that new crank sensor. Also, that low compression on C4 May give you some trouble at some point. Keep both of these in mind if you have misfire issues down the road.

Thanks, I was planning on taking him somewhere that does relearns and maybe have them check other things.
