Default 1999 Chevy blazer 4x4 catalytic converter replacement

Has anyone replaced a catalytic converter on Chevy blazer 4x4? Does the cross member or torsion bars need to be removed to get converter out?

Just did mine yesterday. It is a bit of a battle but it does come out without removing anything else. I did have trouble removing the nuts and ultimately they had to be cut off. Mine is a 99 jimmy, should be the same though.

I did mine on my 1999 4wd. It can be done without removing anything else but it seems like it might not come out at first. LOL I'm pretty sure cut off one of the rods for the hangers with my Dremel to make the removal easier.

Digging up a dead thread but you seem to have done about as much of the same work on your blazer as I have mine over a similar amount of ownership time. Basically, whenever I look something up, there you are! With that in mind, I need to change out my cat and all I seem able to find is how with nothing on specific BRANDS. Did you go with a OE style or universal? If you went with a bolt in OE, what brand and how is it holding up after 3-4 years? Walker looks 'okay' but I've seen mixed reviews on longevity of the other parts. Granted, I only need the blazer to pass emmissions this year (it just failed) and next but if I'm forking out 300+ dollars and my time, I'd like it to last longer than gambling on cheap-o amazon/ebay unit, you know? Unless there's a cheap-o that's known to last that is, I AM a cheapskate at heart after all.

Whoops! I just found your post about changing the cat and the mfg putting the O2 bung in the wrong clocked position. With that being said, have you or anyone else (please chime in!) seen any reliable bolt in cats that are currently available?

The one I put in seems to be working fine. I don't have emissions checks in my state so I can't be sure regarding that aspect. Just be sure to get a look visual look at whatever one you buy so that everything matches up properly.

Just an update for future searchers. The Waller brand direct fit went in perfectly with one minor modification. It came with the metal bar/hanger extending across both sides and I only have one rubber mount. While I 'might' have been able to wrangle it in as is, I decided to hacksaw off the unneeded arm just in case. Also, my muffler had pressed in studs which snapped off quite a bit easier than expected (I honesty thought they were turning after the PB Blaster). and I had to use an air hammer with drift pins to knock them out. Quick tip to keep from beating dents into your flange is to grab a flanged nut with an interior diameter large enough to cover the stud held with some vice grips allows you to Hammar! away a bit easier. I just couldn't really get a decent swing with any of my mini-Mjolners despite REALLY wanting to smack something out of frustration. Harbor Freight is discontinuing the Chicago Pneumatic medium barrel air hammer so if you want one, better grab one quick since the McGraw is still an unknown at this point where the CP has been a cheapskate godsend for most of my life.
