Default 2000 Blazer Zr2 - One of a kinda problem

I have a lifted 2000 Chevy blazer ZR2 ( It's my baby ) Recently well off-roading in it I completely scrambled the rear end ( this is not my problem I've already replaced it ). The problem that is occurring now is that my transmission WILL NOT move in (D) but if I put it in first and get it to about 10 KM/hour I can shift it into drive and it goes through all the gears with no trouble ( no clunks, no bangs nothing ) I've called around and had techs look at it but no one seems to know what the problem is.

I was thinking MAYBE a shift solenoid but it seems doubtful.

does it downshift at all on its own? Shift solenoids casue you to lose gears no matter where the selector is.

Yes it down shifts fine. It shifts like a normal tranny once you get moving. It almost seems like the old style trannys that had belts that would get loose. But I do not believe that it has a belt

The Z I just fixed did the exact same thing. If you started in D the truck would hardly move. Think it was trying to start in 3rd. We replaced the 1-2 and the 2-3 shift solenoids, and did a new tranny filter and the transmission shifted like new after that. Was a 2 hour job in the driveway.

Yep...replace the shift solenoids....both of them since you are going to all the trouble and mess. Also may want to put a drain plug in the pan....but depends upon how long planning on keeping the vehicle.

I've already installed the drain plug ( I just had the tranny pan off for the filter and fluid change ) my only concern with changing the solenoids is that Once you put it in drive after about 10 KM an hour it shifts from 2-3 3-4 great. But I'm going to change them regardless and I'll update next week some time.

Woodsy, this is exactly the same thing the ZR2 we fixed was doing. Once you were moving the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts were fine. It was only the 1-2 and 2-1 shifts that wouldn't happen. We replaced both solenoids because they're not expensive and we decided that if one was worn, the other would probably be at least a little worn too. It's way less work to do both solenoids at the same time, than it is to do the job of pulling the pan twice.

Good luck, and let us know how things go.
