The new spider is better. Among other things the injectors can operate at lower pressures. That said, I don't upgrade any original eq AC Delco parts unless they are broken because the after market parts available today are routinely inferior.

Thanks for that and I really appreciate the responses. I see you generally respond to most, which is nice to see. So I got the g m regulator in. I figured I'd just pop the regulator on and put the spider back just to see what the change was before trying to rebuild the body of the spider. Well, I got to say I got some inconsistent readings. It was definitely better than before, but leak down to about 50 p s I. Pressure came up to 62 every time I energize the key, then Drop to 59 pretty much immediately and then bled downs to about 50 psi several times. I had bought a maddox, one at harbor freight. And that's what I was using. So I went and got another one from advanced auto. A loner just to verify if the maddoz tool was any good.
I got similar readings at first. I tried several different ways to prime the pump. With the prime port as well as taking the relay out like crossing the pins. Add just the regular three second interval from the key, turn it on. interval with the fuel .
I must have done this a dozen times hoping for a good result.. the only way she passed the specification.was to actually crank her for a couple seconds. Then she held the p s I no problem.
Crank the vehicle for a few seconds and visually watched injectors sprayed as I have them out of the cylinders. Doing it this way
She heLd ressure at 59 for ten minutes like three or four times.
And I decided to switch back to the maddox. I think she reads a couple p.S I low with this tool, but was inconsistent until I cranked her. And then let her bleed down.
And just for giggles, I rechecked at the filter thre
e times. That's consistent. Held the pressure at 70 after ten minutes. It is a new pump about a year old a c.Delco.
I was hoping that she would just pass spwc with three second key on. And that just told the p s I in the right range.
Frustrating at Best. Anyways would appreciate any insight you might have.
i got the part from g m parts giant. So I assume it's authentic. Specifications
Other Name: REGULATOR KIT, Fuel Injection; Fuel Pressure Regulator, Regulator Seal Kit
Replaces: 17113203, 88894356, 89060422, 89017453
albeit, it didn't have the vacuum. Outlet. So it looked a bit different than the one that came off. I assume that it's an updated part..

Reason: Missed a question
So you can’t maintain 55 psi for 10 min at key on? What is the initial pressure at key on?
but with the intake off and the injectors removed and hanging loose you can maintain 55 psi at 10 min if you crank the truck and fuel sprays out of the injectors in sequence while cranking and then turn the key off and wait 10 minutes?
if I have that right, then one of two things is happening. Either you can get to a good pressure and hold it after the pump has run longer than 2 to 3 seconds as it would do with the initial key on prime or there’s a leaking injector that seals shortly after it sprays or the regulator is partially defective and starts to hold pressure after it’s exercise longer than 2 to 3 seconds. This all assumes that you consistently get 70 psi at the fuel filter after 10 minutes after key on.
You have summarized correctly.. that was my ratings with a loner from O'Reilly. I switched back to my maddox from harbor freight for today's readings. I seem to be getting the same result now.
Initial pressure goes to 60 psi. The other gauge was 62. It immediately drops to around 52ish with a click as the pump turns off. And it will stay there for hours. It actually gains about 1.5 p, s, I, while it sits..
i was getting different results previously when I used the prime pump in the fuse box. But now she seems to be holding, no matter what I do and how I long I run the pump. Maybe it had something to do with air in the lines as I was testing at the filter and then reconnecting add the schrader. .
And or as you've noted a leaky injector sealing then failing although I never noticed any gas. I thought maybe initially that the spring inside the pressure regulator albeit new was adjusting itself. As I used the pump prime slot.
Since I went back to my maddox pressure tester I guess it could be off a couple psi. This pic is the 53ish psi after she sat for 2hours. Doesn't always go up. I'm leaning towards the leaky injector theory. As when I crank it. Then things changes a bit and bleeds down.from 52 to 49-50 after an hour
the other pic shows immediately after 3sec pump off. 52psi. Which seems to be a constant now.
I'm gonna experiment a little bit with what I got, including the rebuild kit.
it was pretty cheap if I get it to work, then I think I found an original g. M spider the upgrade kit from g. M apparently new. I'd hate to get it working and then have that injector leak again, so they all pass within the ohm test, but i reckon that's the electronics and not necessarily the seal

Is the starting behavior exactly the same every time? It starts promptly but then dies in a few seconds with good fuel pressure but will run on starter fluid? If that’s true then this may be a passlock problem.
I had a very similar problem on my old Trailblazer, and in my case it was the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) that was causing it.
Since you have gas pressure and the engine stays running with starter fluid, it smells like an injection cutoff.
Maybe a problem with the pressure regulator or the MAF sensor connected incorrectly?
I would also check the connectors around the throttle body and the EGR.
And if it has a Passlock immobilizer, a system reset can sometimes work miracles.
Hang in there, you're probably close to solving this!
Let us know if you find the cause.

Update, I just wish I had more time to work on it. Anyhow. I decided so go ahead and go. Do a couple more tests with different pressure.Regulators. one g m and one delpi. Both initial, the pressure started off 59ish then drop to 52 immediately went pump shut off. For this, I used a spider off a 2004 s10. The upgraded spider assembly.. i also tried it with the old the spider assembly and that would drop to around 49. Never saw any leaks, but I guess but maybe there was as I got stronger readings with the junk assembly with a new pressure regulator.
Consistent, every time, drop to fifty two and stayed there. Sometimes overnight, it would maintain pressure and sometimes not. But always longer than ten minutes. Even though that's not 55 psi. I'm chalking that up to at least I hope I had s meter. That's not reading accurately.. probably could run it with that assembly, butWas concerned about the plastic pieces being a bit old. I probably could have ordered those, but ......
Anyhow, so yeah, I went ahead and got a elgin upgraded assembly from napa. New and so well, we will see what the pressures are with that. My guess is they're gonna be similar and if they're miraculously different ten I guess I i found it that it was the whole assembly.
I plan to put it in in the next couple.Days and quit messing around with it.. do I need a new bracket or will the old one work?
