Default 4x4 question

I am having issues with my 4x4, for some reason when I try to switch to 4hi I hear like an electric motor turn but the light just stays flashing. If I try 4low I hear the electric motor plus a clunk sound and I can feel that it shifted(not really sure if it did)because of the way the rpms and the car is behaving, but the light on 4low stays blinking too!!!Is the light actually telling me that it has not shifted or is the switch bad or what should I try? Also the light that says neutral on the 4x4 switch never lights up even if I try switching modes while in neutral like I have read on some of the posts. What is this light for? Thanks in advance for all the help!!!

Just wondering, but if we assume I have a vacuum hose broken, wouldn't the computer let me know that there is a vacuum leak or something? Is all the vacuum system from the engine connected together?Would one leak affect the whole system then? Thanks!!
