Are you putting it into neutral before switching between 4hi/4lo and 2hi? The truck should always be in neutral when switching. If not you're going to tear the transfer case right out of it.

Is it really rough shifting between the 2 when you're rolling? Link clunking and banging?

This can sometimes be normal. If things don't mess up just right inside the transfer case, it can prohibit it from shifting. Typically, it is best to be slightly moving with the transmission in neutral while doing any range shift (2HI or 4HI to 4LO or vise verse). You should be able to do a mode shift (2HI to 4HI or vise verse) while moving or stopped and the transmission should not need to be in neutral, but again, sometimes moving helps to make things mesh together properly.
