Default 4x4 transfer lights not on

I have a 2001 blazer 4x4 four door, somewhere there is a short and so my interior lights don't work including the lights on thefloor, dome, anddash 4x4 buttons, is there any way to see if 4x4 is engaged prior to driving. We got dumped on with snow this weekend and I can't tell if I have it in 4x4 or not because I don't have any lights to signify that it is or is not...please help. is there any way besides the dummy lights on the dash, I know I need to find the short but I don't have the time and from what I hear it is a lengthly process....besides I have no idea where to even start.

additionally just out of curiosity...how long does it or should it take for the light to stop blinking once the button has been pushed to transfer into 4LO, like if I push it and count to 10 then would it be transfered...?

thanks
