Default 96 Blazer LE overheating/dumping coolant

Hello all

My girlfriend has a 96 chev blazer that isnt holding its coolant. The blazer will dump all its coolant through the over flow and overheat, the guage goes right up to the red and the 'check guages' light will come on.

If anybody has any ideas that could help I would appreciate it

Thanks

Not on my Blazer, but on my Ford I had a similar thing.

We un-done the Coolant reservoir bottle and let out a whole load of pressure.... No issues since (We thought it was a headgasket so was glad when all seemed normal again).

It was simply an air block in the pipes, by releasing the pressure, the air block went with it.

Probably won't be this, but here's to hoping.

to clarify, should the engine be on/off? and should the radiator cap be on/off? I just flushed my system today and have been adding fluid to it since I flushed and the truck still runs hot.

These trucks are known for coolant problems from head gaskets to heater cores to blockages. Check the correct thread for possible faults and repairs but do you see alot of gunk on the underside of the radiator cap. Also, when it comes to flushing these things nothing beats a power flusher but it may take several flushes before you flush all of the crap out.

*Moved to 2nd Gen Tech* - Please read the descriptions of the sections and choose the appropriate section for your question.

As others have suggested, make sure that the thermostat is regulating the temperature appropriately, that all of the air is out of the system, and that the radiator cap is maintaining the pressure at the appropriate level (15-16psi).

The best thing to do would be to replace the t-stat and the radiator cap since both are fairly cheap. while you are filling it back up, make sure that you get all of the air out.
