97 4x4 has a very BAD SMELL

i failed my emissions testing due to the cat being completely empty. wouldn't recommend this by any means.
the smell - is it like a dirty grease oil kind of smell? or like a burning plastic grime smell ??
my heater stinks when i first use it on occasion - was told this is a common issue with the blazers.
