ABS Operation

2001 ZR2: I have been having intermittent ABS and Brake lights. Sometimes the ABS light and Brake light come on at start up, other times it comes on when moving slow (city) or fast (highway). I don't have access to a ABS code reader
.
Using a multimeter I measured the voltage of both the DS/PS WSS. Turning the DS tire by hand the voltage would jump to over 300mv ac (rms).
Doing the same for the PS resulted in only about 100mv ac (rms). I removed the sensor cleaned it, the reluctance wheel looked OK. After putting it back together I get over 200mv ac (rms) and more if I get on it.
So far no ABS/Brake light - however I have only driven about 20 miles.
I have never made a panic stop and not much snow or ice where I live.
So my question is... How pronounced is the pulsating when the ABS kicks in? Is it something you know when it happens or more subtle?
thanks for looking - Dave

thanks for the information, the WSS article is very good. ABS/Brake lights are back to intermittent. So I guess I need to purchase a code scanner.
update: Went out this morning to give things the once over and discovered the DS wheel hub ORing seal is sticking out from around the hub. It looks like the top half was sticking out and rubbed on the CV joint until it was cut off - see attached photo.
Don't know if that would cause ABS/Brake lights, but I am sure it needs to be fixed.
Any thoughts about any problems this may cause would be helpful.
