Default Any downside to removing front driveshaft?

After winter passes and I no longer have a need for 4WD, is there any downside to removing the front driveshaft? I want to see if it will help me a little with gas mileage. A friend of mine told me even though I have it set for 2WD, the transfer case is still actively driving the shaft but not engaging (locking) the front wheels in. Obviously I would put it back when winter returns.

Thanks in advance...

You could probably do it but I doubt you'd find any noticeable difference in your fuel mileage.

If you pulled the whole front dif assembly you may see a difference in fuel economy.

Thought some 2nd gens have a slip yolk on the t-case. If so its gonna dump all the fluid in the t-case.

I don't know if it's different for the auto 4WD T-cases, but I know all the 2nd gens I've gone through had a splined output shaft that the front prop shaft locked onto. The only reason I ever removed mine was for 4-lo burnouts through 4th gear

Wasn't really sure, I have a 1st gen and my t-case yolk bolts on. Just thought I've seen slip yolks in some np233 or 231 but that might have been heep junk too. Posilock for the win, I just don't lock my front end in and have 2lo on demand from my seat.
