I did not install an AC Delco cap/rotor, just whatever AutoZone had in stock. I went ahead and got an AC Delco cap/rotor and put them on and it seems to run a bit better... but now I've got a dead miss on cylinder 2.

Not so weird... look close:

I reckon start of molding run, bad insert and/or cold-flow. If it can happen with ACD.. how much MORE likely with el cheapo.

I also went ahead and got a reman'd AC Delco distributor because the one in the truck had a lot of slop anyway. Put the new dis in and swapped with the last cap I had and she's running without throwing any miss codes.
....

Default Pretty good odds

I've opened up a few of these motors after buying them. In quite a few I've noticed the water passages in the heads nearly plugged up. If I had to guess I would say from your problems; you have hairline cracks in the head. All misses on one head is why.

If you still have the ac delco cap and.rotor I'd replace that with Borg warner cap and rotor. They make better parts and are only a few bucks more expensive.

What I'd like to know is whether an earlier cap and rotor.. with vertical wire towers ..will fit the 2nd gen distributor.
Yep.. it would also require the early wire set but for some it might created an option.
- downside of course is cross-fire between wires. Which is probably why that cap was designed in the first place.

Nope, not interchangeable. Distributor housing's are different diameters. Inside the old style is the pick up coil and reluctor. The new style only has the Camshaft Position Sensor, (CMP).
