Block adapter pissing oil all over
#1
A couple weeks ago I replaced the gaskets on the block adapter and put new oil cooler/filter lines on. I thought I was doing a good thing by fixing all that and eliminating the slow leak. WRONG! Now I'm losing much more oil than before. I parked it in front of the house and it was literally streaming oil from under the truck. Thursday I noticed there was a puddle of oil left under the Jimmy so I jacked it up and checked it out. There was oil coming from the top of the block adapter where it bolts up to the underside of the block. The adapter bolts were tight (torqued to spec, 26 ft-lbs) but there was still oil leaking out. I loosened the bolts, adjusted the block adapter to make sure it was seated properly, and re-tightened the bolts. It's still leaking, perhaps worse than what it was before Thursday.
I used the Dorman gasket set when I replaced the block adapter. There were two gaskets which I used: a flat, semi-circular one that fits on top of the adapter, and a large, orange o-ring that goes around the diameter of the top. The original large gasket was a square-cut gasket, not an o-ring. Should I pull the block adapter and replace the o-ring with the old square-cut gasket?

2 things, when you took it off, did you take a screwdriver and scrape the old gasket out, i mean really scrape the block clean to get all the old gasket off. and sometimes I have heard if you tighten them too much, it can damage the gasket.
I am glad I do not have to deal with this crap anymore and just removed the remote filter all together.

I think I've got it fixed. Here's what I found:
There's a gasket that goes on top of the block adapter up inside the block. It has some kind of rubberized coating on each side of it. That coating apparently has to be peeled off. I had a set of the Dorman adapter gaskets from some other project that I had forgotten about. I found them on a shelf in the garage. The gaskets out of the set that are used for the block adapter were not used from that set. I started looking at the gasket in question and I noticed the coating. I got under the truck and peeled off that coating on the gasket and reinstalled it. I ran the truck about fifteen minutes and got back underneath and checked and there was no leakage that I could see. I'll check again in the morning for oil on the floor of the garage.
I would like it very much if Dorman or someone would have shared that information before I lost a quart of oil driving around town.
