brakes and dying

Default brakes and dying

ive recently started having this problem where i go to push on my brake and its really stiff. and when i do apply my brakes at a light the car stutters and occasionaly dies. any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak in the power booster. The power brakes derive the power assist from engine vacuum. A vacuum leak will cause the engine to run rough or die.

could that also be the reason the brakes are really stiff, if so can i get it repaired or does it need to be replaced

check the rubber hoses, make sure they are in good condition and not cracked/falling apart.
If worst case you may need to replace it, I have another hard drive for my laptop with my GM manual loaded, I can look it up if needed (does not run well on vista )

Yes, if it leaks vacuum you will not get the assist that gives you power brakes. Check the big hose going to the booster and the check valve at the booster but if the engine only runs rough or dies when you step on the brake the leak is inside the boster. If so you need to replace it as repairing it is not a simple task.

My sons 95 Blazer had that same problem, replaced the brake power booster and problem went away!

sorry one more quick question. everytime i see parts they come with or without the master cylinder. do i need a new master cylinder?

I would just change out the booster... you can always do the master cylinder later if it acts up.
