Default brakes overheated

On a weekend trip to very hilly North Ga residential area, just before leaving gated 'hood, I engaged E brake making a trash drop stop.

Forgot to disengage, started off, but did not notice due to very hilly area and vehicle is under stress coming or going anywhere.

Wife noticed dash light after about 100 feet or so, disengaged with manual release, and kept going.

5 miles later smoke and smell tell me brakes have siezed.

Stopped, pushed brake lever down and release, roll back and forward under gear, (on shoulder), proceed another 5 miles to lighted pavement at corner station.

Now left rear is smokin', stinkin, with me assuming stuck shut calipers. Waited, put coin vacuum on wheel to cool, and finally threw water on wheel to cool.

By now I can roll in neutral, stop with E-brake, and release to keep rollin'.

I'm thinking E-brake is OK now, but don't trust that caliper, as the right rear stuck on me a cpl of years past after pads replacement.

Sat. nite, darkness falling, 80 miles from home, I ask advice of a Go-kart mechanic who happens to be at the location.

He sells me his vicegrips and helps me apply them to flexible fluid line to disable that wheel. That gave me confidence to proceed.

Drove to work with vicegrips still in place, delivered to my mechanic w/instructions to fix.

His inspection found nothing needing fix, but he did not go into wheel as far as inspecting E-brake shoe.

He test drove and told me I was lucky.

Question:

Did the E-brake stick and burn only, to be freed by me after cool-down?

I was glad to be spared the caliper job but I remain uneasy about something like this happening again.
