a/c troubleshooting
I have a 97 Chevy Blazer Lt Stock. I am having a problem with my Ac, I replaced the compressor back in Oct 09, drove for a month transmission went out again went in the shop just got it back a few weeks ago. When i put it in the shop ac worked fine. Now the clutch will not engage. i have thrown a set of guages on it low side and high side are reading equal. About 70. I have jumpered the ac clutch cycling switch and nothing still no comressor. Any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Crappy part is the compressor only has a 3 mth warrenty.
The relay should be one of the ones up on the firewall.
You can disconnect the wiring from the clutch and make up your own power/ground jumper wires. There is no particular polarity to the clutch so you can't get it wrong. Wire it up safely at the compressor then start your motor. Connect the wiring at the battery and see what happens.

I have the same problem. I replaced the relay and the pressure switch. I have power at the clutch. The clutch will not engage unless I force it with a screwdriver. It engages but nothing gets cold. I've added R134 the line got cold and the air in the cabin was cold for a bit. After I shut the A/C off and turn it on again the clutch does not engage. I'm guessing the R134 is leaking out. I can buy a new rebuild kit for $221.00 and then recharge. Would anyone recommend this or something else?
You first have to find the leak if that is what is causing the problems or you may end up wasting time and money. Many of the aftermarket recharge kits have dye in them to help you find the leaks.
And if you do end up replacing components, it is a very good idea to get the system pumped down with a vacuum pump to A) ensure there are no leaks and B) get most of the moisture laden air out of the system for a good charge of refrigerant.

Thanks for the info. about the dye. I would guess that this brand did not have any dye. As for the leak: If the compressor engages with a little help from a screwdriver, would that mean there is adequate pressure in the system? What might cause the clutch not to engage on its own? I have a test light and I have power at the clutch. This auto is new to me so I no experience with this AC system.

you need a vacuum pump and to pull down the system and see if it hold vacuum, if it doesn't you have a leak somewhere, most commonly are the evaporator core or the schrader valves could also be the condenser or hoses but doubtful.
