Default Clunking for the rear end

96 4x4 blazer has a clunk in the rear end. Weather forward or revers .Almost sound like a machine gun.

A friend of one of my co workers says the yoke on the read diff. needs to be tightened that it is not hitting the gears fully.

Does anyone have a picture of the yoke assembly? and can the yoke not being tight caus this problem?

u-joints were changed along with pinion seal.

Hmmm-If the yoke wasn't tight I'd be inclined to think you would see a grease leak, regardless of the new seal,I have never heard of this happening on ANY vehicle, but I suspect that either the yoke isn't fully seated(which will cause damage)or the gear set is shot, and I suspect the latter!

was it a garage that repaired it? warranty? if not, was the crush sleeve replaced? if your pinion nut(holds the yoke to the pinion gear) has come loose there is a good chance you have already done some pretty severe damage. hard to say though. if you rotate your driveshaft back and forth and the yoke goes in and out of the housing, then the pinion nut is loose(not a sure thing). usually if it is loose it will be loudest when you are coasting or gearing down and almost quiet when you are driving or gently accelerating. If the noise is from the rear axle i would bet differential gears.

I looked at it closely and the yoke is on tight, no movement in or out while tires are rotated.

U-joints good, even greased .

I noticed i could pull the rear wheels out more then expected. ( sitting in front of the wheel as if I would remove it, I could with hands at 3 and 9 position actually pull the tire and get movement as well as noise in the differential )

When it iwas in the shop getting tires and the pinion seal replaced, they told me the rear end was the cause on the noise ( slight roar). BUT not work done to fix that.
