clutch fan question
I have a 97 ZR2 blazer and the clutch fan keeps engaging while im going down the road. Is this normal? The coolant temp never gets over 170ish and the enging and trans are both operating normal just dont know why the clutch fan keeps engaging any help would be appreciated thanks.
mine is doing the same thing right now and i just dont feel like fixing it. the thing with the fan is that it has a thermal-rotational clutch in it. when the motor gets too hot and the fan is spinning slow enough, it will engage until you get around 2500 rpm where it normally disengages. what has happened to yours, and mine, is that the thermal part of the clutch has gotten worn out. too many heat cycles. the only way to fix it is to change the clutch. i believe that they are around 50-60 dollars. i havent even checked. but they arent that hard to change.
and 170?? that seems low. you should have a 195* thermostat in it. you should change that while you are doing the fan. thats what the stock operating temp is. and having it run cooler doesnt have any horse power or torque advantages. you need the heat to properly burn the fuel and have the cats and other things get the to right temp. including O2 sensors.

Thanks for the imput. I thought it was running a little on the cold side but i just bought it a couple weeks ago so i will add a thermostat to the list of things to fix. Im currently trying to put in new seals in the transfer case so my transmission fluid will quit leaking into it.
