My girlfriend used the 'ole Blazer last night, and when she came home she told me that the driver door wasn't closing all the way. We had been having a hard time for awhile with opening the door (Yes, this was a sign I should have paid more attention to because I believe it's what caused what you're about to see) so this was kinda strange. So I just went out this afternoon to check it out and here's what I found:


The striker isn't in securely at all.





Now I've searched the forums and have found out people having this problem and the results were the hinge pins being worn. So now I have another item on the to-do list: Install new hinge pins right with or after getting some sheet metal welded in that nice hold and striker adjusted. Time to search the forum now and see how hard it is for hinge pin R2. Hopefully someone doesn't rape me for some sheet metal work and welding as well.

 

My driver door is doing this as well! I have been using a small crowbar to bend mine back towards the door, as it is not quite as bad as yours is yet.

I am in Houston, and I can get the sheet-metal/welding done fairly cheap. The pin for the door (my driver door is definately loose), I am curious about as well.

Subscribed - Would like to know how it turns out for you and what you end up doing. My door is on the list after a few other more important things are fixed.

I browsed youtube (man the maintenance help I've found on that site!) and found these dudes changing them out on a '96ish looking Tahoe. Looks simple enough. Here's the video YouTube - Install Replace Door Hinge Pin Chevy GMC Pickup Truck SUV - 1AAuto.com.

I'm going to start searching the phonebook for metal shops tomorrow and make some calls. I have access to an auto hobby shop that I think has a welder, but I haven't welded since high school so I don't know if it's worth me to attempt it. I'd like to try, but don't want to make things harder for me in the long run.

The more I think about it, the harder I'm thinking it will be to align the striker once a new piece is welded in. I'll update this as I go through all the pains of fixing 'er up!

 

I've got one like this too. My plans are to remove the interior behind the seat and mig weld it back

 

Mine finally broke friday ,it's still there but the latch on the door is whats bad with mine . I'm not going to drive it , But I'm going to keep my eye open for a new door then have my buddie weld the striker back on . We are open seven days a week where I work now so I don't get much free time plus working on getting our new house fixed so we can get moved in .

 

Sorry this took so long to reply to, but I decided to go the el cheapo route on repairing this. I went to a couple of body shops and was quoted as far up as $700 down to $50.

After looking at the pics, I'm sure you can tell which price I went with! All they did was weld it back in place and it took about 10 minutes to do. As far as the actual fix, the door closes far better than it ever has since I've owned it. Awesome looking point - 0, door works again points - 1 kagillion!

100% awesomeness. I just laughed out loud so hard at those pics. Probably because I know mine is going to end up the same way. Its pretty beat up and dented in from the door pin that has wallowed out the top hole so the door sags. I better get to rigging something up before I end up with what youve got there. Its works though! I would have mine look like that in a heartbeat for 50$ if I didnt have to hulk out to get the darn thing to latch.

 

pins and bushings are not too hard to do. You may have to get oversized bushings though. Since they were bad for so long the pins most likely wore into the hinges.

 

My door pins wore into the hinge bad, almost breaking through the hinge completely. Went to the hardware store and got some thick grade 8 washers that the new pin bushings fit in and then welded them to the the hinge. Worked out good, and was much easier and cheaper than putting in new hinges.

 

There are also aftermarket hinges you can buy...take door off drill out spot welds on hinges, drill and tap, then bolt on...couple hours worth of work..as for the striker..mine bent in like 45 degrees, i unbolted striker after using it to pull metal back out welded around it grind it down used a lil slide hammer action some body filler and it was like it never happened
