Striker Plate repair

A few months ago my lock mechanism caught and I slammed the door once or twice (a few maybe...) before actually looking at what was going on. After some screwing around with it and a google search I got it all sorted, but then my door started acting up, wouldn't close right. I had bent the B-pillar behind the striker plate, which later trned into a crack. I went through and replaced the hinge pins, and after a few weeks of collecting tools set to work on the crack. Here is a pic of the first round welding, I am not a great welder and I don't have a great welder so there are a few holes but it is staying in place which is better than it was. I have gotten some advice on tacking another plate of steel over the top of this repair instead of the shims, any thoughts?
