I'm doing an a/v install on my 98 blazer and I need to attach a small amp to the floor. The amp is pretty small, and it has a nice place to sit right by the passenger's left leg on the hump. Can I drill short sheet metal screws into the hump there? Does Chevy tend to affix any wires or anything to the under-side of the hump?

 

what year is your blazer? my first gen doesn't have any wires there but not sure about second gens.

 

I would get on under and take a look no matter what anybody says here.

It's a 1998 second gen. I figured I wouldn't be able to get a good view due to the transmission obscuring the view, but I'll give it a shot.

That said, if anyone knows if there's normally anything there, I'd appreciate the input.

 

So I got under there(It's a 4x4 LS) and I can feel what feels like rubber vacuum hoses above the trans under the hump. They're kind of susceptible to puncture, but I don't even know what they're for. They could even be wires since I'm just going by feel, but if so, they'd be fat like spark plug wires.

I'm fairly confident I can use short sheet metal screws and not puncture them since they're loose, but it's still risky.

Anyone know what they are? Currently leaning towards taking the risk.

 

The tube might be the vac hose for your transfer case Or the transmission vent.
I wouldn't take the risk.. Id move the stuff over then put them back after your done.

 

Yep +1 on tranny vac actuator lines, why not try to slip some cardboard, sheet vinyl or something for just a bit of safety. I think with some shorty self tapping sheet metal screws..... chance of you nailing those lines is pretty slim but ya know it ain't my truck.

 

Well, I ended up moving the tubes slightly and putting a piece of sheet metal between them and the hump for protection.

That said, the screws wouldn't even go deep enough to pierce the metal of the hump. So the amp is now secured snugly to the cardboard(ish) hump and the padding...

It seems fairly secure for what I'm using it for and I don't have to worry about it piercing anything important, so I'm going to leave it as-is for now.
