Okay so I have a 1996 S10 Blazer 4DR 4X4 4.3 Vortec Auto with 150k miles.
I am moving from PA to CA. 3 day trip in about a month. Most of my route will be flat all the way across the country on I-80. But I will be hitting some mountains and going over Donner Pass.
The thing is I need to tow my 1978 Trans Am. It is about 3,400lbs. I will be using a uHaul tow dolly.
My question is, can it do it? Does anyone have an past experience towing across the country like this? What gear should I be towing in?
I will also be driving a 17ft uHaul. I would like to not put the extra weight on the uHaul truck and maybe hurt the gas mileage even more.
In all I will have my 07 Accord being driven by my wife,my blazer being driven by a friend and me in the uHaul truck. Also have a 1yr old and two dogs. These are my options. Flying, paying a moving company/shipping company is out of question.
I did a search on this topic and saw a lot of people suggesting a tranny cooler. Is this needed for the flat part of the trip if I decide to not pull the dolly with the uHaul? What cooler have you all found to be the best as far as installation/price? Does my blazer already have a tranny cooler?
My blazer has had the injector, new magnoflo bolt in Catalytic converter and muffler, brakes, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotors, brake drums, axle seal, sway bar links all replaced in the past months. Injectors were done last week(took the random cylinder misfire light off). Ball joints are getting done this week. I am trying to get all the future problems out of the way since it has 150k miles. I already have a very good uhaul tow hitch.
Thanks in advance.

My recommendation is to use the Uhaul van to tow the T/A.
Otherwise, install an external tranny cooler and hope for the best. Yes, your Blazer can do it but why put the stress on your vehicle when you can do it on a rental?

Im a truck driver and I can tell you Donner is very dangerous. Use the UHaul to tow the TA. Do not use your Blazer if you are doubting it. In the UHaul, make sure you manually drop the transmission into a lower gear at the top of Donner before you start going down. That is not the Pass to mess with.

Thanks guys. This is the advice I needed. Hooking it to the Uhual is what I need to do then.

Is there a more safe southern route I could take that will not lead me too far off my path to the Sacramento area?

The closest route would be I40W to I5N.
80W hits Sac head on.
I40 grades are a lot safer.
If you wanna go that route take 80w to I-71 S. When you get to the Columbus bypass go west then south to I-70.
Ride 70 W to St Louis. When you cross the Mississippi river into Missouri take the I55/I44 exit then follow I44W. Follow that thru OKC and hook up with I40W. Make sure to have toll money. All of I44 in Oklahoma is a toll road. kinda pricey but the grades on this route make it wroth it.

thanks. I will check into that for sure. I really appreciate it. I don't mind driving a little longer if it means it is safer.
