Engine ticking problem?
#11
I couldn't get your video to work. But all I know is our 97 Blazer knocks & ticks on a regular basis. I have tried everything to find the noises. I finally gave up & just drive it. It have been knocking & ticking now for over 35,000 miles. The noises never get worse or change so I quit worrying about them. The wife commutes 120 miles round trip twice a week to work. We do some hard 4x4 with it. I run 20-50 Napa synthetic oil with Power Punch. Every so often I put in some Restore. We carry tow insurance. I have shops with tow trucks at both ends of her commute, I have instructed them both if she breaks tow her in & call me. But I don't expect a call any time soon.

I'll tell you what, I didn't have that problem but rather a rattle when I started out, sounded like the timing chain or lifters. This went on for years..until one day I was reading one of the post here and someone mention put a can of seafoam in it (a different problem I was just reading different posts) Well, after another year or two pass by, and I did it, I went to Auto Zone, bought a can of Seafoam put it in the oil filler..and I''ll be damn, that noise is gone. I also put a can in the gas and my rpms went from 550 to 650 and it appears to have more pep and no more sounds coming from the engine...

I have tried Seafoam, Restore, Marvel Oil, Rislone, ATF Fluid, Lucas, Restore, & Power Punch. I have tried 10-30 oil, 5-30 oil Both dino & synthetic. In the beginning I changed the oil every 1000 miles. So I have just live with it. I just checked the mileage & it started 39,000 miles ago. We just drive it easy as far as RPMs. We don't run over 3000 RPMs. It runs just great. Neither of us are in that big of hurry. If we are in a hurry we have a Jeep Limited 5.9 with plenty of horsepower & torque. It runs 0-60 in just over 6 seconds. With a top speed of who knows? I have taken it to 120 MPH & the computer didn't shut it down so who knows how fast it will run.

I'm a big fan of the stethescope too. You can absolutely pinpoint where your problem is. Instead of an extension though, I would prefer a cut off piece of garden hose. It'll still transfer the sound and is more flexible. You'll have to kinda hunt around with the end but the good thing is you'll know within about 1/2 inch if where your issue is. I thought I had a lifter sticking but after the hose method found out ot was my PCV valve.
