front brake inquiry
#1
someday i really need to replce my front rotors and calipers, i seem to be eating pads at the rate of i set per 3,000 miles (inner pad goes first) any worthwhile upgrades that are really worth it? i have the single-piston calipers. they dont seem to hand up or smell hot after driveing, but the wear and frequency of needing changed certainly say that something aint exactly right with the calipers. and if there is a worthwhile upgrade, now would be the time to do it. ive seen slotted rotors on the napa auto parts site but dont know if it would just be a big waste of money.

When the inner pad wears quicker than the outboard pad, it means there is a caliper piston binding. Most auto parts stores have remanufactured calipers that include the mounting bracket, and all of the hardware, commonly referred to as "friction ready" calipers. Some include the pads too, but generally the pads are pretty cheap quality so you're better off buying a good name brand, (Bendix, Wagner, Raybestos) seperately. Stay away from the store brands, (Duralast, Wearever etc).
Make sure the calipers come with the brackets: the guide pins rust up in holes and cause the outboard pads to wear prematurely. If the fronts wear out prematurely, better check the rears, they might need the same treatment as the fronts. Brake repairs are not the place to "cut corners" by using cheap parts. Do it right.... once.
