Default fuel filter

How often should the fuel filter be replaced, and for that matter where is it located on a 2000 4 dr 4wd?

Under normal driving conditions the fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles.
The filter is located on the left side frame rail under the truck

Great ,thanks for all your help. Correct me if i'm wrong but to change it do you take out the fuse for the fuel pump then start the truck and let the fuel run out of the lines?

That's what I do! You could also bleed it at the fuel pressure test port with either a fuel pressure gauge or a screwdriver and rag, but I prefer to pull out the fuse just incase someone tries to be smart and turns the key on while I'm under it.

Ya, that's not a bad idea. The idea is to remove the pressure from the fuel system so it doesn't spray all over when you disconnect the line from the filter.
Some fuel will still leak out, so I recommend using a bucket to catch the fuel and safety glasses to keep it outta your eyes.
If you need light, use a flashlight, not an electrical trouble light. (electricity and gas don't play well together)
