Fuel filter or worse?

2002 Blazer ZR2 2dr v6 78,000 miles. I can start it and it will idle at around 700 rpm but when it is put into drive it will not idle and will stall. I can keep it running and if I don't have to stop or slow down to idle it seems to run fine. I do see the rpm's surging a bit at highway speeds but that does seem to go away after a while. I'm guessing fuel filter but would love to hear any other theories. I'm going to try the filter first and was wondering how hard it is to do and what's needed beyond the replacement filter? Thanks in advance. Great forum!

Is the check engine light on? Have you checked fuel pressure and leakdown?
To replace the fuel filter you will need: 20mm open end wrench to hold the filter, 16mm flare nut wrench, (line wrench) to loosen the fuel line, 13mm socket, 3" extension and ratchet to remove the filter bracket. When reinstalling, apply some antiseize to the threads on the fuel line, help the next guy out, it might be you

Thanks. Do not have a check engine light going off and I have not checked the fuel pressure and leakdown. I've seen posts that say you should release the pressure in the system first and figured I could check the pressure first before anything. Key on check pressure wait 10 (with key on) and check?
