Question fuel pump install

I own a 2 door 2000 blazer, and I was wondering if anyone has ever cut a access hatch to replace the fuel pump? instead of dropping the tank. I think I'm having fuel issues. the pump I have in right now is atleast 4 or 5 yrs old, I don't remember if I had the fuel filter replaced either.

Welcome to the forum. I'd want to be sure I have fuel issues before removing the pump assembly from any direction. There's a better than average chance the filter was replaced with the pump.

Harbor freight has a fuel injection pump test kit for $20. Mine and other member's gauge wept at the connection, but some teflon tape on the threads seals it up. There's an excellent thread here on testing regulated pressure, pump max output and leakdown. You'll be pleased to meet Captain Hook.

I wouldn't go hacking the floor of the Blazer up just to mess with the pump... Unless you have a very rusted out undercarriage, dropping the tank takes 15-20 minutes, the worst part of it is just getting under and working under the vehicle in my opinion... Having access to a lift sure does make the job much easier though...

I haven't had to address this issue myself and hope I never will! :-)

when I go to start up my blazer after its been off for a few hours, the engine hesitates, sounds like it wants to stall. sometimes it does stall. kinda sounds like I'm reving up the engine. I have to wait at least 30 seconds before I put it in drive. if I don't, I can go only 5 mph around there, feels like I'm dragging something 5x heavier than my truck to put it that way. it has no power at all. over the summer we changed the intake manifold along with fuel injectors. nothing changed. a few days ago, In heavy rain my blazer stalled, so I figured something just got wet. but then I noticed I wasn't able to hear the fuel pump turn on when I turned the key forward, then back off. then 2 days later it started back up again. I heard about checking the wiring harness for the pump, but I don't know where exactly that is. youtube isn't much help. I don't remember when the last time it was when I had a fuel filter put in either.

Dont go throwing money at it an hope it works. Get a fuel pressure test done or buy your own gauge, they`re cheap and easy to use.

Also hows your exhaust pressure out of the tail pipe. This can happen with a clogged cat also

I did it in case my pump ever fails again. But I did it with the fuel tank removed so I could make sure that I didn't cut any floor braces. Mines a '99' 4-door. Probably wouldn't be a good idea to try to cut yours using this picture, I'd be worried about sparks dropping on the top of the fuel tank while cutting. And yours is a 2-door... senior member rockp2 advises that his 2-door ZR2 has a floor brace over the pump.

I dont know about a regular 2 door, but a ZR2 has a support cross brace that is right over the pump. How's your power going up hills with it floored? As newguy stated, you may have a clogged exhaust. Check your MAF sensor also, make sure the little resistor wires in it aren't broken off the metal bars. Clean it with MAF sensor cleaner

I used a punch and hammer to make an access door on the side of the road when my fuel pump went for the 3 time... this time it was on the side of the road. After that I went to the scrap yard and cut a slightly bigger piece out of a scrap blazer, used some black silicon and glued it onto the opening. Worked great for changing out the fuel pump.
