Going through starts

This is my husbands truck but he's at work so here goes. Its a 2000 blazer 4.3L. The starter has been replaced 3 times in a very short time frame. The flywheel is good. But it keeps making the awful noise when its started. We have tried shims also. Someone has just told us about a starter bracket that could be missing. So my question is does this sound right and can anyone tell me more about it. Thank you for reading my post.

i haven't seen a bracket on any of the ones i've played with. what is happening to the starters that causes you to replace them? can you describe the noise? is it like something is chewing itself up? rubbing/binding?

we have only had it about a year but we were told it needed a starter when we purchased it. It sounds like the starter is engaging and disengaging. The fly wheel was marked and turned and looked good. We don't drive it very often because of this, so it sits and we keep trying.
Is it possible that the transmission was changed and the torque converter was not. Could this cause a problem with the flywheel which in turn is breaking the starter?

Sounds like the flexplate (flywheel) might be the problem. I've seen the teeth get chewed up pretty good from bad starters. If the flexplate teeth are worn down, no amount of starter changing will help it. Unfortunately, changing the flexplate requires the transmission to be removed. It's sad that there would need to be sooo much labour to change a $70 part!

and you said,
we need to clarify what is in your truck ratpack, is it stick (flywheel) or auto (flexplate)? it does make a difference, and helps us, help you, with your problem.
