Default greasing zerk fittings?

2004 blazer 175k mi

Should I grease the zerk fittings on this vehicle? If so, how often? Is there a very clear diagram which shows where the fittings are?

I do them at every oil change.

The official service manual has diagrams of their location. I would guess a Haynes manual would also have that info.

Info about when to grease them is likely in the owners manual. Pdfs of these can often be downloaded.

As for where they are, on my 99 4dr, 4wd Blazer, these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:
  • upper and lower ball joints
  • Inner and outer tie-rod ends
  • Pittman and Idler arm attachments to center-link.
When I replaced the u-joint of my front driveshaft, it came with a grease fitting. Depending on the parts used during repairs, you too may have greasable u-joints.

I also installed an upgraded idler arm system and for it, the idler arm pivot also gets greased.

Agree with Christine. I have a greaseable u-joint in the back of the drive shaft and two on the front anti-sway bar. That gives me 13 total on my Blazer and I lube them every oil change.

Wow, every oil change?? I haven't ever done them unless some of the dealer servicing did it without my knowledge. I guess I need to find an oil change place that does this? What happens if they don't get greased?

Yes, every oil change. At one time it was better known as an "oil change and grease job".

I would guess that most people never grease the fittings. If the components don't get greased, they will fail prematurely.

Is it possible to get a photograph of what these zerk fittings look like? Do they all look the same?

I guess it is posdible doing the greasing every oil change is more than necessary. However when I do my oil changes, I do the greasing since I'm already there.

Have you found a copy of your Owners Manual? It will tell you what you need to do.

As for why do do it? As mentioned above, topping off the grease greatly extends the life of your components.

FYI many modern cars have greaseless ball joints. This might be why you haven't heard of doing this.

I usually go with a cheap mini grease gun with cartridge, and get it to work once, then cant get it to reload, so next time i have to buy another one. However, I've a full sized one too, for going around corners, and can't figure that one out either.
