Default Grinding noise while moving forward

my gf called me today to come look at her 2000 blazer 4wd today.. its making a grinding noise when going forward and from a quick n short test drive it sounds as though its in the vicinity of the transmission. it doesnt make any noise going in reverse though..

i know with the limited details i gave its hard to diagnose but i didnt get to really look at it in detail yet.. i did quiz her on if she has done anything stupid lately and she said when she was out with her gf's last week she accidentally knocked it in reverse while going forward and it shut off but that was last week and hasnt made a noise until now..

for me to take it to my garage i'd have to drive it about 10 miles, i'm hopin it would be ok to drive that far so i can get under it..

any ideas guys? most importantly think its ok to drive right so i can look at it?

I had this happen and it was my rear differential. One of the gears cracked. You can just open it up and take a look. With mine there were pieces everywhere.

well last night i got all 4 wheels off the ground crawled underneath and had someone put it in gear trying to hear it while underneath, tried in both 2wd and 4wd and didnt hear anything.. put it back on the ground and drove it a lil and i'm not hearing it now.. i dunno wtf is going on i'm hoping it doesnt come back and was a fluke or somethin..

i drove it to my garage goin 30mph max and it sounded like it was about to explode so now so who knows.. if it comes back i'm sure i will be back.
