Angry Help!!Run Rough, Smoke From Exhaust And Gauges Went Crazy

Hi,
I was driving home when the vehicle started to surge for a while then i noticed smoke in the rear view mirror, not sure what color it was dark..then the gauges all went crazy and car coasted to a halt...I lifted hood and it smelt hot although the temp wasnt reading hot and the oil was low to about the fill level..it now doesnt start...Please help...Any suggestions???

Did the check engine light come on? If so, what were the codes?

I have just been out and bought a computer diagnostic machine and will try to get the codes from the vehicle....Appreciate the help!!

tried to read the codes but getting no joy....my dad also has the same car and his plug under the dash is the other way up and his i can read ...my one looks like somebody has looked at this before and put it back the wrong way round....this is going to make it difficult if I cant read the codes huh???

Check the CIG fuse. It powers the DLC.

It sounds as though you may have an ignition switch issue given the stall & dash gauges going crazy.

hi, i have managed to replace the cig fuse and the reader picked up the code P1404 Egr valve stuck open or Circuit Performance??? Now as I said before I do have access to an identicle vehicle to swap stuff over without buying parts and finding out this was wrong....Is the EGR valve easy to swap out?? And again I really do appreciate your help..

Two bolts and an electrical connection is all that need to be removed/disconnected to pull the EGR valve. Take a look at the links below:
