Default Ignition switch replacement

I seem to have a faulty/ intermittent ignition switch on '97 4x4 Blazer. Sometimes when the key is turned I get no dash lites and shift solenoid does not unlock. If I rock the key back and forth a couple of times, lites come on and truck starts and runs fine. Also it has cut out while driving more than once. My question is, does the steering wheel need to come off or just the column covers. I do not have wheel puller.

1st post here, be gentle
Great site!

yes the wheel has to come off. there is also a lock plate under the steering wheel that needs to be removed. it is under spring pressure and can be removed by hand but there is a tool to do it that makes it much easier.

you should be able to "rent" both tools at AutoZone or other nearby parts store...
