Default Jimmy Doesn't Require Key

So since I still can't drive my Jimmy, haven't fixed the lack of a cable from my shifter to my tranny, I go out and start my truck up just to make sure nothing else is going out. Today i decided that I would try to start it without a key. Sure enough started right up. I had a friend who's Caddy you could start it with the key, take the key out and it would still run and start back up as long as you didn't turn the ignition back too far. What would cause this to happen? It's not really a bad thing now because if I lose my keys, any one of my friends who own an s-series can open my truck and I can still drive it.

This is something my dad tried to explain to me once... They knew someone who took an older truck from their neighbors because the ignition wasnt turned to far back. I have never heard anything about it happening with newer truck through... I want to say it was a 60's truck that i have heard this happening with

my dads 1999 f250 does this. start it up take the key out still runs. i think the keys just get so far worn that eventually they will slide past the tumblers even when the ignitions on. although on my 2000 blazer theres a lock once the keys is in and the ignition you cannot pull it out

I had the exact same problem on my 1997 Blazer. It had that problem when I got it though. I assumed that the key cylinder just got so warn it didn't care anymore. I always found this a convenience though, I could start it, take the key out, lock the doors to let it warm up and know nothing would happen.

Sometimes the tumblers get gummed up with dust and crap and stick in place. All three of my previous work trucks had this happen at one time or another. I sprayed some WD-40 in there, probably not the best product, and things went back to normal for a while.

If yo have been around Blazer's long enough you will learn to find out that his is a very common problem on them! More on the first gen's than the Second gen's, BUT still a problem....After so many time's of the ignition cycling there is a little lock inside of the ignition that comes down when the key is in the on position and lock's the tumbler's to stop the key from coming out when the engine is running. This little lock often break's or just wear's out from use, do me a favor look at your key and tell me if it's starting to get that yellow look to it, and maybe you key cant' cut through the plastic on a new cd anymore. That is the sign that your ignition is worn out
