I was trying to describe the 'water passage' square at the ends of the two gaskets. There are a total of four of these smaller openings. Your referred to it as the water passage seal frame which you broke when removing it from the engine. All four of mine looked like yours----broken and missing.

 

Ah yes. I now wonder if the one that broke had been weakened more than the others and that is why it broke.
