my 1998 blazer
Hey can anyone out there help me troubleshoot why my transfer case will not go into 2wd, even after I replaced the encoder (transfer case shift motor) I can here it shifting, it attempts to shift twice and then goes back into 4wd hi? any ideas? Do I need to clear codes? Thanks ......Rich
3 button selectable or 4 button automatic 4WD? The vacuum actuator under the battery tray needs to release vacuum and the clutch on the right front axle needs to disengage when shifted to 2WD. If it's stuck in 4WD, vacuum is probably still applied to the actuator. Remove the vacuum line from the actuator and see if the cable releases about 3/4". Post your results.
Have you tried manually shifting the transfer case? This would require the removal of the encoder motor, but if the t-case is locked up, the encoder wouldn't have a prayer getting it to shift.
Also, on the front axle, if there is a wiring connector near where the cable connects, you may try disconnecting the connector which should tell the PCM that the front axle is no longer locked in (I think the switch is normally open anyway). This may allow the shift to 2wd to occur.
