Default in need of timing help plz!!

99 blazer jsut did head gasket and intake manifold gasket and cant seem to get it timed. finally got it to start but it makes a HORRIBLE pop noise and starts to smoke. any advice would be great its driving me nuts!

i have the 2 notches in the crank pully lined up with the marks on the timing chain cover before i put the dizzy in and i have tried with the rotor close to the "6" and with the rotor pin on wire #1.

When the rotor points to the "6" on the housing, it is pointing at #1 wire in the cap. You must have the crankshaft on the compression stroke for # 1 cylinder, not the exhaust stroke, (the timing marks will line up on both). If it backfires when trying to start it, you had #1 cylinder on the exhaust stroke. Very easy way to fix it: manually turn the crankshaft clockwise and line up the timing marks on the timing cover AND the rotor points at the "6". Then rotate the crankshaft one revolution clockwise until the marks line up again. Pull the distributor and install it so the rotor points to the "6".

Yes, manually turn the crank clockwise until the timing marks on the dampener line up with the pointer and the oil pan:

AND the rotor is on the "6":

Then turn the crank one revolution, then remove the distributor, and reinstall it so the rotor points to the "6".

When you turn the crank the additional revolution, the rotor will end up 180 degrees opposite from the "6". Keep in mind that the crankshaft makes two revolutions for each single revolution of the distributor.

The distributor housing, rotor, and camshaft position sensor are the same for 6 cyl & 8 cyl. The wheel with the "windows" is different. 6 cylinder has 3 "windows" and 8 cylinder has 4 "windows". When using the distributor on a 6 cylinder engine, the rotor must point to the "6", and to the "8" on a V8.

Ok I cannot get it to line up on the 6. The only way the dizzy will drop in leaves it about 42 degrees before or after the 6. So I try to drop it in 42 before and it looks like it will line up but gets stuck about a 1/4 inch away from all the way in.
