Default new fuel pump problem

I just bought a new fuel pump for my 98 Blazer 4 door 4X4 it has a metal tank and i checked with the dealership parts dept. for the correct part number by VIN before ordering and they said it needed the AC Delco # MU 1772 so taking advice form most everyone i ordered the AC Delco. It currently has a Airtex in it Part #E3953M which cross refrences to that part #. My problem is when attempting to install it wont seem to fit all the way in what do i need to do ? any help ? Thanks in advanced.

Did you compress the top into the bottom section?
It should compress by 2 to 3 inches.
The 4 doors have an 18 gallon tank.
If your cross reference and VIN specify the MU1772, it should work.

I looked at Rock Auto, they say the Mu1772 is not for an 18 gallon tank. (?????)
Maybe what you need is # MU1733: MODULE,F/TNK F/PMP(SENDER & PUMP) 4 DOOR; w/18 GAL TK(NE2); INCLS SEAL; w/o LOW LUBRICITY FUEL SYS SENDER(K55)

MY1772:MODULE,F/TNK F/PMP(SENDER & PUMP) 4 DOOR; CODE SFG, SFU; w/o 18 GAL TK(NE2)

Look at your old pump, and see if it has the codes SFG or SFU on it's top.
If not, your new 1772 pump is the wrong unit.

I got the problem figured out ,the new rubber seal was so tight it wouldn't let the pump set far enough down to put the metal C ring in place. So I took the tank to a mechanic friend and I am letting someone with experience do it. Thanks for your help.
