oil cooler question

I was changing my oil and I was just wondering what the plug in the oil filter mount is for. I always wondered but never really though to ask.

I think it may be how you get to the oil filter bypass.

My factory oil pressure gauge has stopped working so I thought about using this to connect an oil pressure gauge.
