Hello,
Before I broke something I thought I'd ask the correct procedure for removing the oil fill tube on the passenger valve cover. Also, I have my lower intake manifold off, what is the black cylindrical unit next to the thermostat?
I'd like to remove it so I can put the intake in a parts cleaner.

Oil fill tube unscrews about one half turn counter clockwise.


Directly forward of the thermostat is the EGR valve.


When installing the lower intake, make sure you follow the tightening sequence and torque specs. If it is not done correctly, it can do permanent damage to the engine:

One thing to note here. If someone has had yours off to replace the O-ring, or for any reason, it's the exact same joint that is used for the oil fill cap. You can take the tube out and put the cap directly in the hole if you want.

However, there's an additional hole in the base of the tube, and a locking tab in any new ("virgin") valve cover. To get it out the first time, you have to turn it hard enough to break the locking tab. Use a strap wrench or some channel lock pliers at the base and turn counter clockwise. You'll hear a big snap sound as the tab breaks, and it will come right off after that. The broken tab isn't an issue. It's designed that way.

I'm glad ya said that because I tried twisting it off and it still didn't want to come out.
I'm just going to remove the cover first and have a look from the underneath side as well.
