Default P0440 Code Solved

This code, and only this code, set the check engine light and I checked three things in the following order.

1) Checked gas cap o'ring. It was dry rotted. Bought a new AC Delco cap light stayed on but it needed a new one so no harm done.
2) Purge valve on the intake. Put +12vdc on it and it worked. It kinda was a PIA to get off the intake.
3) Took the vapor canister purge solenoid off. Put +12Vdc on it and it kinda actuated but seemed weak. I cleaned it up, took top off to blow out the filter and put wd40 into the valve. Put voltage to it and it snapped shut with authority. Worked it a few times while spraying it with wd40. Put it all back together and before I got out of the driveway the light went out.

Total dollars spent $15. Total time 1.5 hrs.

When I first looked at the flow chart to diagnose this problem I felt a bit overwhelmed so I looked at the what the purge system consists of and it is only like 4 components and vacuum lines. All I needed was a voltmeter and a +12dc supply to solve the problem. I have one but if I didn't I would have used the car battery.

Hopefully this will help others.

I had the same issue a few months ago. Ended up buying a new solenoid for like $25 and it cleared right up.

YES YOU DID!!! I just popped a p0440. This came a week after I fixed a p0452 (that was the tank sensor). Gas cap was new so I followed your method and BINGO! SES turned off just after starting. Tho I did spend $16 on a new fuel filter while I was at it. Yuck it was dirty!
