I'd start looking in junkyards. All that I see available is the steel tank even going up as far as a '98. I think the first use of the plastic tank was '97 and that was spuratic. I thought that all '98's had the plastic tank, but that doesn't appear to be so given the lack of availability.
I would look for the actual leak though. You might be able to drop the tank and epoxy the leak to seal it and save a ton of $$$.

ya, i know....didnt wanna go through all the hassle of dropping the tank just to patch it, and have another leak next spring...ohio winters wreak havok on steel tanks....plastic is much to my liking...wonder if any other plastic tanks would fit

The more I looked into it, the more I think that 98 was the first year for the plastic tank and the sending unit also changed then. You may not be able to find a plastic tank for your application.
Have you thought of having a steel tank galvanized prior to installation? Or maybe spraying the outside with a zinc primer then shooting some flat black paint over that?

I agree that this is your best bet. Dorman makes a replacement steel tank [Part # 576-386] that is under $100.
