I have a non-functioning AC compressor on my '98. Dobbs tells me about $1100 to replace it. I figure I'll just have to do without AC. Problem is, compressor is starting to whine. My question is. If I remove the compressor, can I go to the parts store and get a fan belt for a 4.3 litre WITHOUT AC. Should be a simple swap, right?
Thanks in advance,
BD

This was addressed very recently on this forum, but I believe the individual decided to replace the compressor. But it gave me pause as my a/c does not work either and my compressor occaisionally squeals,so I took a look. You will see by the belt routing diagram that there appears to be a stationary idler at this location on non-a/c units. As the compressor mount is split,I would be surprised that if the lower half has the threaded hole in which to install this pulley as none is visible with the compressor in place. Pull the compressor mount apart and gently rotate the unit back towards the master cylinder and take a look for this mounting hole. Hopefully more knowledgeable sources will respond as well! Happy 4TH!!!

My 2000 s10 has two diagrams as well, one shows routing without the a/c. But isn't really clear on what takes its place, you might check out a chiltons manual or maybe a shop. Otherwise just use the search feature here, your bound to find some help.

If you look at the bracket that the compressor is mounted to there will a hole for a stationary grooved idler pulley you need to buy the pulley with the spacer GM part number 88909589 install that pulley and a non a/c belt, or buy dorman part number 34174 which is the a/c eliminator pulley and run your factory belt.
