Questions about general maint..help please!
The girlfriends blazer was running weird last night, sounded like a fuel pump going bad so I took it in today. I threw code PO300 and they said a misfire on cylinder #4. I just told them to clean the injector and of course being a stealership they wanted to do a whole bunch of other stuff but I told them I would do it....so this weekend im going to do some general maintenence. I was wondering if you guys could answer some questions for me since im not that familiar with this car.
Its a 1996 Chevy Blazer, 4WD, 4.3L, 150K miles..
-Im going to replace the plugs and plug wires. What plugs do you recommend and the gap? And what plug wires?
-Im also going to look into changing the fuel filter...how hard is this?
-Changing the belts too..but I know how to do that
-Any other stuff you guys think I should do?
Thanks!
Marc

RE: Questions about general maint..help please!
My girlfriends 96 is having similar probs.
I'm doing a complete tune-up on it. plugs, wires, cap and rotor, oil change, air and fuel filter. Already cleaned the MAF sensor.
I'm also getting the rad and tranny flushed.( Trans is starting to slip.)

Get AC Delco Platinum plugs. The gap should be .060 for a '96. The wires can be a regular set of AC Delcos. Change the cap and rotor as well. One major heads up about changing the plugs is the #3 plug (middle plug, drivers side). It's directly behind the steering shaft. See the link at the end of the post. I suggest changing the PCV valve too. Changing the fuel filter isn't all that hard, however, you have to relieve the fuel pressure first. Also, if it hasn't been done in a while, it may be hard to get off. Good luck with everything.
P.S. I also have a '96.

The number 3 plug is the hardest, but I found out this weekend, is that if you pull the orange boot towards the cab out of the way, turn the wheel to the right till the flat part of the shaft is vertical, you can get a 3/8" breaker bar fenagled in there pretty easily. Then it's all cake. Same way for puttin it back in.

Get a Haynes/Chilton manual. It covers basic maintenance pretty well.
Give it a full tune up.
Plugs- AC Delco ask at the aprts store and ask them the gap.
Plug wires.
Cap/Rotor
Air filter
Fuel filter- easy to change, located on frame rail. If yours has compression fittings, use a flare wrench.
PVC valve
Oil and oil filter
Serp belt- easy to change, follow the directions in the book.
Top off your radiator coolant
Windshield wipers and fluid are optional, but never hurt.
Check and fill the tranny, t-case, and both differentials.
Balance and rotate the tires, and check the air pressure.
Then wash and wax that baby and have a nice evening out on the town.

Thanks for all the help guys!
One more question...
Heres the deal. Im in college (St. Cloud, Minnesota) and my girlfirend is doing in Rochester, Minnesota which is about 150 miles. I will be driving down there this weekend and stopping by my parents house on the way through to grab the tools. So.....
Are the plugs and tensioner pulley for the belt metric or standard?
Thanks!

RE: Questions about general maint..help please!
The plugs take a spark plug socket, and the tensioner takes a 1/2 rachet, no socket.
You will need a torx bit screwdriver for the rotor cap, or maybe a phillips. Depends on year.
