I have searched all over this forum, and can't find the answer I need. I have a 1999 S-10 2-door 4WD Blazer with a 5-speed manual. When I first purchased it used, the parking brake was not working as I thought it should. It would hold the vehicle to some degree (level ground or slight grade), but not on a very steep grade at all. I adjusted everything according to the book, but still no REAL STRONG park brake. In my occupation I use my Blazer a lot, and a lot of times during the winter I have to run the heater while sitting still, and holding the regular brake gets tiresome real quick.

My question is this - I have everything to completely re-do the rear parking brake. I have both the left and right cables, the equalizer to connect the cables, and new shoes (even though the old ones looked good).

At the bottom of the shoe is the park brake adjuster. On each side is a "notch" that the end of the "horseshoe" fits into. The shoe will fit in either way - meaning that the shoe will fit in with the notch in the vertical position, or with the notch in the horizontal position.

Which way should it be? The notch I am speaking of is the groove that is cut out of the round adjuster.

Any help is appreciated.....

1. Raise the suitably support the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel and the tire.

1. Remove the caliper.
2. Remove the rotor.
3. Remove the park brake cable from the park brake lever.
4. Remove the park brake shoe assembly by sliding the shoe towards the hold down spring until the shoe is disengaged from the spring.
5. Remove the shoe from the actuation mechanism.
6. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean towel.
7. Turn the adjustment screw to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut, then back it off 1/4 turn.
8. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.

Installation Procedure

1. Install a new park brake shoe.
2. Position the shoe on the inboard side of the actuation mechanism.
3. Clip the shoe on the hold down spring.
4. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate and with both tips located in the slots.
5. Manually check the park brake for proper operation.
6. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
7. Adjust the park brake shoe.
8. Install the caliper.
9. Install the rotor.
10. Install the tire and wheel.
11. Lower the vehicle.
