Default Replaced starter but there is a gap

We installed a new starter, and there is about a 1/4" (or less)gap at the bottom of where it goes into the flywheel--is that right?? We didn't pay attention if the one we took out was like that. Won't water and such get in there?

Also, on another problem, Have white smoke with strong fuel odor, running rough. After searching this problem-I've checked the plugs-seem normal tannish color, not black or white. coolant level hasn't changed. Also oil seems thinner and a "bit" over full mark with ,i think, a fuel odor to it. Can gas get into your oil?

codes i'm getting/gotten lately are:1345--1133--134--144--152--133--102

Thanx for any insight.

DTC's must be diagnosed & repaired in the order they are retrieved. The P1345 means the distributor is not installed correctly, (off at least one tooth). It must be corrected first, then clear the memories and perform a drive cycle.

I have no gap on my 95 don't think you should have one. If your injectors or fuel pressure regulator (FPR) are leaking you can get gas in your oil. Pull the dip-stick and smell, it may smell like gas. Do a fuel pressure leak down test. Directions are all over the board.
